Yes. Florida Medicaid pays for PPEC for children under 21 who qualify, and families pay no copay for the PPEC service. Your child needs a doctor's referral, and the center asks Medicaid to approve the care every 180 days. Rides and some therapies are paid through other Medicaid benefits, not the PPEC payment.

Cost is often the first worry for parents. This guide explains what Florida Medicaid pays for, what it pays separately, what families may owe, and what to do if your child does not have Medicaid yet.

Talk with your child's doctor and your Medicaid case manager about your child's coverage.

At a glance

  • Florida Medicaid covers PPEC for children from birth through age 20 1.
  • There is no copay or coinsurance for the PPEC service 2.
  • The center asks Medicaid to approve care every 180 days, or sooner if needs change 2.
  • Medicaid pays the center directly, even if your child is in a Medicaid health plan 3.
  • Rides come through Medicaid's transportation benefit, with an escort the rules require the center to send 2.
  • Families on the Medically Needy program may owe a monthly share of cost first 4.

Does Florida Medicaid cover PPEC?

Yes. PPEC is a Florida Medicaid service for children under 21 who need it for medical reasons 2. The state's health care agency, AHCA, describes it as care for "children from birth through age 20 with medically-complex conditions" 1.

To be covered, your child needs:

  1. Florida Medicaid.
  2. A prescription for PPEC from your child's doctor.
  3. Medical needs that call for nursing care during the day, and a doctor's OK that your child is medically stable 2.
  4. Medicaid's approval, called prior authorization 2.

Read who qualifies for PPEC in Florida for each rule in detail.

What does a family pay for PPEC with Medicaid?

For most families with Florida Medicaid, nothing for the PPEC service. The Medicaid policy says there is no coinsurance or copayment for PPEC 2. A full day at a PPEC is 5 to 12 hours, and a child can attend up to 12 hours a day 25.

There is one group that may pay something first. If your child gets Medicaid through the Medically Needy program, your family may owe a monthly share of cost. That is the amount of medical bills you must have before Medicaid starts to pay 4.

Your child's coverage What you pay for the PPEC service
Florida Medicaid No copay or coinsurance 2
Medically Needy program Your monthly share of cost first, then Medicaid pays 4
Private insurance only Call us. The center works with Florida Medicaid and its plans
No coverage Call us to ask about other ways to pay

What is prior authorization for PPEC?

Prior authorization means Florida Medicaid approves the care before it is paid. The PPEC asks for it, not the family. The approval lasts up to 180 days, and the center asks again before it ends, or sooner if your child's needs change 2.

Each time, the center sends your child's plan of care. The plan is updated every 180 days and signed by a registered nurse and your child's doctor 2. A state review company looks at the request for AHCA 1.

What parents can do to help:

  • Keep your child's doctor visits up to date, so the referral stays current.
  • Tell the center when your child's health or care changes.
  • Sign the daily log of when your child arrives and leaves, which Medicaid requires 2.

Does my Medicaid health plan pay for PPEC?

Not directly, and your child can still attend. Children in any Florida Medicaid plan can attend a PPEC. Florida Medicaid, through AHCA, pays the center itself, even when your child is in a plan 3. Children who get PPEC services do not have to join a Medicaid health plan, though they may choose to 6.

This also applies to children in the CMS Health Plan, Florida's plan for children with special health care needs. Since October 1, 2026, Molina Healthcare runs the CMS Health Plan, taking over from Sunshine Health 7. Your child's health plan can still help coordinate care and referrals.

What does Medicaid pay for separately?

Some things a child gets during the day are not part of the PPEC payment. Medicaid may pay for them through other benefits 2.

  • Rides. Medicaid covers rides to and from the center through its transportation benefit. Florida's Medicaid rules require the center to send an escort 2.
  • Therapy. Speech, occupational and physical therapy are billed separately from the PPEC day 2.
  • Food and formula. These are not part of the PPEC payment 2. Ask us what to send from home.

Every PPEC must still offer nursing, personal care, developmental therapies, respiratory therapy, psychosocial services, medical services and caregiver training as part of the PPEC day 2.

What if my child does not have Medicaid yet?

Apply first. The Florida Department of Children and Families decides who gets Medicaid, and you can apply online through MyACCESS 4. You can also call Florida KidCare at 1-888-540-5437 to learn about children's health coverage 8.

Once your child has Medicaid, children under 19 keep it for 12 months in a row in most cases, even if family income changes 9. When it is time to renew, the state asks you to finish by the 15th of the month your benefits end 4.

What if we earn too much for Medicaid?

You may still have options. The Medically Needy program helps families whose income or savings are too high for full Medicaid 4. If your child has only private insurance, call us and we will talk it through.

Call us at (561) 877-2152. We can talk through what fits your family. Open Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 7 pm.
